Green Leads War Ready Past Stubborn D2 Waymakers in TBT Opener

In a tightly contested TBT Lexington 2024 matchup, War Ready edged out the D2 Waymakers 80-73 at Rupp Arena on July 19. The game showcased a blend of offensive firepower and defensive grit from both sides, with War Ready’s balanced attack ultimately proving too much for the Waymakers to handle.

War Ready’s victory was spearheaded by the dynamic play of Wendell Green, who put on a show with a game-high 22 points. Green’s performance was a masterclass in efficiency, as he shot 8-19 from the field, including a impressive 4-7 from beyond the arc. His ability to create for others was also on display, dishing out 5 assists and grabbing 4 rebounds.

Not to be outdone, the D2 Waymakers’ Gage Davis turned in a stellar performance of his own. Davis poured in 28 points on 10-15 shooting, including a scorching 6-8 from three-point range. His efforts kept the Waymakers within striking distance throughout the contest.

War Ready’s depth proved to be a key factor in their victory. Jvon Mccormick provided a spark off the bench with 14 points in just 18 minutes of play, while Toarlyn Fitzpatrick contributed 8 points and a team-high 9 rebounds in his 21 minutes on the floor.

For the Waymakers, Armoni Foster complemented Davis’ scoring outburst with a well-rounded game, tallying 6 points, 4 rebounds, and a game-high 3 assists. Jacobo Diaz also made his presence felt in the paint, scoring 20 points and pulling down 6 rebounds.

The game was a tale of contrasting styles, with War Ready opting for a more balanced scoring approach (five players in double figures) compared to the Waymakers’ reliance on their dynamic duo of Davis and Diaz.

Despite shooting a lower percentage from the field (42.9% compared to War Ready’s 52.5%), the Waymakers managed to stay competitive thanks to their superior three-point shooting (34.4% to 40.0%) and free throw accuracy (66.7% to 50.0%).

In the end, War Ready’s ability to control the glass (32 rebounds to 26) and limit turnovers (6 to the Waymakers’ 13) proved to be the difference in this closely fought TBT battle.

This victory keeps War Ready’s TBT dreams alive as they advance in the tournament, while the D2 Waymakers exit with their heads held high after a valiant effort against a talented opponent.
